Here’s the next painting in the series, depicting Isabella of Aragon and wife of Phillip III of France falling from her horse in Italy on their way back from the Eighth Crusade.
It’s quite a sad story – she was eight months pregnant at the time and gave birth to a premature stillborn son. She died of her injuries 17 days later, Phillip III took her body back to France and buried in the Basilica of St Denis. The tomb like many others was desecrated in the French Revolution.
I felt that the final colour study here was becoming a bit stilted. There were so many elements that I was attempting to portray that it was constricting the composition somewhat. If I had to paint this one again I think I’d do it quite differently.
