The final painting in the series depicts Louis of Anjou and Margherita of Savoy on horseback with their residence, the castle of Cosenza, in the background.
It was decided that the horses needed to be more dynamic so these were changed for the subsequent colour study.
I started the painting in the UK and didn’t get around to finishing it until I was working away on a different project in Istanbul. Faced with how to do this with the original painting in England, I struck upon the idea of getting the photograph I’d taken of it digitally transferred onto canvas in Istanbul and then resuming painting. I reduced the focus on the digital artwork before I had it printed so that it functioned well as an underpainting. The whole process worked like a dream. There was one reference of a Mediterranean tree that I was stuck for but as luck had it there was one right outside my apartment balcony!
